3CL Foundation joins Strategic Committee of EU Large Scale Pilot Project European Digital Credentials for EU (DC4EU)
Pioneering the Way Forward for Digital Identity in Europe
Exciting developments are underway in the realm of digital identity in Europe, as the 3CL Foundation joins forces with the European Digital Credentials for EU (DC4EU) pilot project. Funded under the Digital Europe Programme, DC4EU aims to test the technical specifications for the Common Toolbox for European Digital Identity and prototype a European Digital Identity Wallet. This collaboration paves the way for secure and convenient sharing of identity data by European citizens and businesses.
Coordinated by the General Secretariat for Digital Administration (SGAD) at the Spanish Ministry for Economic Affairs, DC4EU includes the participation of over 35 public administrations and more than 40 private entities across 23 Member States and Ukraine. As a member of the DC4EU Strategic Committee, Dr. Alex Grech, Executive Director of 3CL, brings expertise in strategic communications and verifiable credentials for the education sector to the table.
Kickoff Ceremony and Strategic Outlook
On May 26th, over 100 partners of the DC4EU project gathered at the Royal Mint of Spain in Madrid for a momentous kickoff ceremony. The event commenced with speeches by the project coordinator and representatives from the European Commission. Dr. Grech chaired three panel discussions focused on outlining the project’s overall strategy. These discussions explained how DC4EU will leverage emerging and pre-existing technologies and protocols from relevant EU projects, maximizing opportunities for scalability. With a keen eye on the future, DC4EU will pilot the use of the European Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet in the educational sector (educational credentials and professional qualifications) and the Social Security domain (PDA1 and EHIC). The pilot will align with ESSPASS and the European Learning Model. DC4EU is unique in its use of the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI) in conjunction with the EUDI Wallet.

Collaboration Opportunities
DC4EU aims to revolutionise the way citizens and businesses share their identity data. It represents a pivotal moment in the journey towards a secure and streamlined European Digital Identity ecosystem. As the collaboration between 3CL Foundation and DC4EU gains momentum, opportunities for partnership and participation are ripe. Interested organisations should approach us to explore collaboration through various avenues, such as connecting with one of the work packages, securing official observer status, or becoming part of the community of practice that will drive this initiative forward. We believe that DC4EU may contribute to bringing much needed change in the European education landscape and further empower learners with secure and portable digital credentials which are accessible via the EUDI wallet. Together, we can forge a future where digital credentials empower individuals and fuel innovation across Europe.
