So I asked ChatGPT what a day at school in the year 2150 might look like and the results were interesting. Due to the advancements in technology, changes in pedagogy, and societal shifts, students may not even need to leave their homes to go to school physically. They might log into a virtual campus from their homes or designated learning spaces using advanced brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that provide seamless connectivity to the school’s virtual environment.
So imagine this, you close your eyes or put on some sunglasses, and bam – you’re at school virtually. You’re immediately greeted by AI learning assistants, which provide personalized schedules, updates on assignments, and announcements for the day. You pass by a mirror, your virtual identity is exactly as you imagined it- you’re a virtual version of your ideal self…and it starts to blur realities. You get over your insecurities and snap back to your hyper-real environment.
Your AI bots tell you to head to the second floor- Class 3B if we’re being specific. You decide not to teleport that day, but walk it…or take the virtual elevator- you’re feeling a bit nostalgic or rather…human. You get there and everyone’s already chatting with their AI tutors – 50 lessons are taking place according to everyone’s level/skillset. Some people are gesticulating, others are drawing out concepts, some are dancing along to the memorable songs created by their assistants to memorize concepts and others are using 3D model software to visualise them in real time. Some AI instructors are glitching when they turn on their human expressions to promote positive reinforcement, empathy, and emotional intelligence- but we’ve got emotional training next period anyway.
You’re done with your lesson and enter a history class. You’re required to enter VR to access AR. You’re all going to be taking a walk around ancient Rome today and witness historical events. Your avatar changes clothes, and you’re in ancient Rome witnessing history. You’re told you’ll see Caesar being assassinated – how poetic.
History ends and it’s time for your break! You enter a virtual common room and decide to speak to Haru from Japan, Sarah from America, and Abeni from Africa. We’re all speaking in our native languages but AI is automatically translating our conversations in real-time (Could you imagine learning a language from scratch? Sounds tedious). You grab some virtual food that automatically delivers real food to you in real life tailor-made to your nutritional needs and preferences. You head over to the mental wellness check area. Your mental and emotional well-being is scanned and you join a class on mindfulness and the importance of physical exercise.
You then head over to the next class – science. Virtual labs enable you to play with cells at their atomic level, perform surgeries, or even watch cells attack viruses. You can’t wait for your tests – they’re so much fun! Can you believe people used to do exams?! Today it’s more of a game – you need to solve puzzles to save someone’s life by determining what issues a patient has based on multiple factors presented to you by a virtual doctor. You ask questions to determine their condition, you zoom into parts of the body that have issues and take screenshots and place them next to each other. Your AI guide starts asking you what you think it is and you start asking it questions, you’re getting closer! After about half an hour, you manage to solve it, you immediately get a grade and you level up, that simple.
It’s the end of the day, you engage in reflective journaling, using AI-assisted prompts to record your thoughts, experiences, and lessons learned throughout the day. Your sunglasses or VR Goggle’s or even lenses beep three times and shut off – that’s the end of your school day.
