30. A Critical Consumption Model and Digital Heuristics (Part 2)
Pause! This is the first step in consuming anything critically.
Here, Dr Emma Pauncefort exhorts us to stay strong in the face of continual encouragement to consume content quickly and urges us to make peace with the idea that we will never be able to consume everything we want to. She goes on to give broad categories to guide meaningful questioning of content, starting with a check-in with ourselves as to what we think we know and what we think we ought to find out, with the latter needing to cover the creator (the original creator) and the context of content (including who is paying). The aim of this detective work and ‘lateral’ reading and, ultimately, reformed digital consumption? To ensure the time we spend online enhances rather than undermines our wellbeing and development, or, in other words, equips us with a form of digital heuristics with us firmly in the driving seat.
