Digital Games for Learning

Digital Games for Learning

Should we treat digital games as trusted tools for learning?

Digital technology, and more specifically, digital games have a positive and fruitful impact on education. From encouraging discussion to stimulating critical thinking questions, games promote interaction and success in the classroom. Students not only become more motivated to learn but they also retain information better when digital games are used to complement learning activities. Further, by immersing oneself into the virtual world, dominant cultural discourses can be challenged because the knowledge we think we already have gets put into question.

About the Webinar

In this webinar, Dr. Stefano Gualeni and Dr. Iro Voulgari from the Institute of Digital Games at the University of Malta answer this question by providing insights on:

  • The ways the virtual world can change perspectives that go beyond human perceptions.
  • The contexts in which lecturers can make use of games as training methods.
  • The importance of game literacy.
  • The future of the gaming industry in an educational context.

Key takeaways

  • Games improve skills and competencies, such as understanding content knowledge.
  • Games support critical thinking, analyzing and synthesizing information, decision making, creativity, and problem-solving.
  • Games have links to social contexts where players can become aware of real-world problems and social issues.
  • Games have started to develop better societal representation.
