The third webinar in our emerging technologies and education series will discuss the enormous potential for games to be used as educational tools by bridging the virtual world with real world applications. Co-hosted with the Commonwealth of Learning, the webinar aligns with our research within the DEL4ALL project which focuses on how digital enhanced learning projects are being consolidated into an increasingly cohesive, dynamic, participatory and sustainable ecosystem.
The webinar will be held on Thursday, 16th July at 17:00 CET and led by Dr Stefano Gualeni and Dr Iro Voulgari from the Institute of Digital Games at the University of Malta.

What the Games and Education Webinar will cover
Our experts will discuss the most well-known educational tool: games. Games offer a variety of distinguishing features, such as interactivity, immersion in virtual worlds, shifting of point of view, and using storytelling and narrative, that can support learning. Recently, gamification – the application of competitive or strategic elements central to game design integrated into non-game contexts – has intensified with the growing ubiquity of educational technology used in learning environments because it can augment learner motivation and engagement.
You will learn about the merits of gamification and how the design and pedagogy of games can engage students beyond a simple reward system and enhance learning experiences by acquiring competencies and retention.
Meet the Speakers
Dr. Stefano Gualeni is a philosopher who designs digital games and a game designer who is passionate about philosophy. He is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Digital Games (University of Malta) where he works in the overlaps between continental philosophy and the design of virtual worlds. In summer, he is a Visiting Professor at the Laguna College of Art and Design (LCAD) in Laguna Beach, California.
Dr Iro Voulgari is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Digital Games and teaching staff at the Department of Early Childhood Education, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece. She has studied Educational Sciences at the Department of Education Sciences in Pre-School Age, Democritus University of Thrace in Greece, holds an M.Ed. on Information Technology, Multimedia and Education from the University of Leeds, UK, and a PhD on Massively Multiplayer Online Games & Learning from the Department of Educational Sciences & Early Childhood Education, University of Patras, in Greece. Her research focuses on game based learning, game studies, and digital literacy. She is teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses on digital games, virtual worlds, and learning technologies. She has organised several workshops and events relevant to game based learning, Information and Communication Technologies in Education, and Digital Storytelling in local and international venues. She has worked on several Nationally and EU funded research projects on the design, implementation, and assessment of learning technologies and digital games in teaching and learning.
