Our Digital Creation and Consumption Landscape
How do we prepare learners to cope with disinformation, fake news, and radicalization on digital media platforms?
While lies circulate the internet, facts, opinions, and biases do as well which is why the digital landscape must be understood.
Lie Detectors is an organization set out to help students conquer fake news online. Their goal is to teach young learners about the difference between lies and well-reported journalism by training and deploying journalists to speak in classrooms about ethical journalism. They believe that if young learners understand how journalists work, they’ll be able to fact-check themselves and critically think about the content they read online.
About the Webinar
In the final webinar of the ‘Digital Literacy Lab for Educators’ MOOC, Adeline Brion from Lie Detectors discusses:
- How reputable journalists and media houses have a standard and system in place to ensure they’re held accountable for verifying the truth.
- How literacy needs to be rethought so that by the time a student turns 15, they are able to verify their sources and facts.
- How games, such as goviralgame.com and getbadnews.com, can be used to teach students how to tackle disinformation.
- How day-to-day critical thinking practices are essential to understanding content posted on digital media platforms.
Key takeaways
- Critical media literacy needs to be weaved into teacher training as a normal skill, regardless of the subject they teach.
- Individuals need to understand information production so that they can trust what is being disseminated.
- It is not possible for fact-checkers to be everywhere, resulting in a growing lack of trust in journalism.
- Good journalism should be transparent, hold up to the gold standard, and make people stop to think critically.
